I received a warning about text in my ad. What can I do?

If you've received a warning about having too much text in your ad's image, you should edit it. Keep in mind if the ad was created from a boosted Page post, you'll have to delete the post and recreate it in a way that follows our ads policies if you'd like to have it run as an ad.

Ads on Facebook may contain text in the headline, message and image or video thumbnail. Each of these has different limits to follow.

1, 2: Text in headlines and message:

Your ad, which must include a headline and message, is typically limited to 25 characters for the headline and 90 characters for the message. This may vary for each type of ad. For specific guidelines, see the Facebook Ads Guide.

3: Text in ad images:

Images in your ads can include text that meets our general Advertising Guidelines, but may not include more than 20% text in the image to ensure people on Facebook only see high-quality content. This includes logos and slogans in images. We recommend that you use your logo as your Page's thumbnail and use the text field in the ad to get your message across.

To see if your ad image meets the 20% text limit:

  1. Go to the grid tool.
  2. Click Browse to upload an image you want to use in your ad.
  3. Click Show grid to display the image within the 5x5 grid.
  4. Click on the boxes that contain text. If text is present in 6 or more boxes, then the image more than likely has more than 20% text and may not eligible to be used in an ad in News Feed or the right column.
  5. If your image has more than 20% text, you can edit your ad.

Note: This grid serves as a guide of how we review ad images/video thumbnails for text. We have the final say in whether or not your image is compliant with our policies.

Allowed in the 20% text policy:

  • Pictures of products that include text on the actual product
  • Photos of products in real situations or photos of products with a background

Not allowed in the 20% text policy:

  • Images that are zoomed in on logos/images with text overlay
  • Images that are clearly edited to include text on the product as a loophole to policy
